"There are 4 colours: black, grey, red, ochre and of course the white of the paper. The red may stand for blood that navigates street-like arteries or may signal danger or the halt of traffic lights. The black and grey of the endpapers, bookend 'A Modern Forest' with the traditional colours of the city: its darkness and grime. The ochre may be the earth on which the city is built, or the shifting sands which threaten to cover and flatten the city’s features in a similar way that the screenprinting process has. The screenprinting process guarantees that there is not a perfect finish to these maps...certain parts are disappearing as a result of the screen filling in, or a 'bad' pull of the squeegee... but this is intentional, because it gives the reader a chance to complete what is unfinished, what has become obscured— by exercising the imagination."
